The way you do Anything is the way you do Everything...
Hey All, it is the beginning of another year, and I really wish you a Happy New Year from the bottom of my heart. Personally, 2020 was a fantastic year for me. I started blogging and found my coach for life – Puja Puneet, I summoned the courage to start a new career as a life coach.
First and foremost, I would like
to thank you - my reader, for supporting me by reading my blogs. It gives me so
much pleasure to hear positive reviews from so many of you. This really keeps me going, especially during
challenging times.
In my last blog – (https://shobitaraghu.blogspot.com/2020/12/are-you-prisoner-of-your-own-beliefs.html),
I talked about New Year resolutions and the number 1 reason our resolutions
fail most of the time. In this blog, let us talk about 1 crucial aspect that
increases the probability of achieving your goals by 50%.
Mike Murdock says, “I can’t change your life till I can get to change your daily routine”. This means if you desire to see a change in your life, you have to change the way you plan and execute the smallest of tasks in your daily life. In other words, the way you do anything is the way you do everything.
Sometimes, the small things that we
ignore, considering them as insignificant, matter the most. We create our lives
with minutest of the habits we have developed over time.
When I planned to write a blog on
this topic, I recalled an anecdote from one of the Harv Eker’s training which I
am narrating now.
A father takes his 4-year-old son
to buy an ice cream to a nearby store. When they were walking back home, the kid
suddenly drops the ice cream. Saddened, the child cries for another ice cream.
This time the kid demands a bigger one. The response from the father was so apt
and can be related to our lives. He says, “When you could not handle a small ice-cream,
how can you handle a bigger one?”
Harv linked this story to our real-life
scenarios. He says, many of us crib about our financial status. We keep
complaining about finding it tough to manage our monthly expenses with our current
income. And we wish and pray to God that he grant us more income which could fulfil
all our desires. God questions us saying ‘If you cannot manage your small
income now, how can you expect yourself to manage higher income?’
Harv’s message boils down to this
blog’s primary point – ‘The way you do anything is the way you do everything’.
I would like to narrate another
example to give more clarity on the topic of this blog.
These days waking up early in the
morning has become a new fad. It is time tested and proven. Our forefathers
woke up before sunrise and were generally more energetic and healthier than us.
It is quite difficult for us to follow their routine.
To truly wake up early and be
active like our forefathers, we need to limit screen time, prepone dinner, prepone
evening teatime, prepone lunch, prepone breakfast and prepone exercise. It’s ‘The
way you do anything is the way you do everything.’
My dad is very disciplined about
the way he spends his day. If I could describe my dad’s personality in one word,
I would say - time clock. That is because I do not have to look at the time when
my dad is around. I know that it is 6 AM when he wakes up, 6.30 when he
exercises, 8 when he bathes and 9 when he has his breakfast. Likewise, his
lunchtime, his work and his dinner time are also planned and executed on the
dot. He goes to bed at 10.30 PM, and so starts his day early.
Have you seen an Athlete talk
about their routine that helps them excel at the Olympics or a National level
Championship? They will tell you that becoming successful is not just what
happens on the field. They become what they are by practising those little
things day in and day out until it is perfectly executed. An Olympic champion
like Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt or Tennis superstars like Roger Federer have routines
and disciplines every day before a major championship. They take months to
prepare for a tournament and are very disciplined in practice, exercise and
rest. A key takeaway here is they are incredibly disciplined during seasons and
take it easy during off-seasons.
Here is a beautiful quote by Swami Vivekananda,
Some of you might think that the above example is only for Athletes and Celebrities. And that discipline is not really needed for ordinary people like us. Let us take some examples from our everyday lives. A person who often goes late to the office than what he promised himself, I bet he will be late for a crucial meeting that could be life-altering. Also, if someone is lazy all the time at home, they are most likely lazy at work and other aspects of life.Like my mentor Puja Puneet says, it is not always about intensity, but it is all about consistency. Being consistent in your activities is more important than planning an intensive schedule which you might end up executing only for a small period of time.
I would
like to end this blog with a story about our nightingale – Lata Mangeshkar.
In an
interview, Lata Mangeshkar advised young singers to practice Riyaaz or Swara
Sadhana every day without fail. She often regretted not having the time to
practice due to her busy schedule hopping from studio to studio to sing over 25,000
songs over 7 decades in 20 languages. She also talks about giving herself entirely
to each song physically, mentally, and emotionally, which means understanding
each song’s lyrics. This again illustrates a simple fact ‘The way you do
anything is the way you do everything’. This applies to every field, every person,
and every aspect of life.
